In the foreword to his "Catechism of perseverance", published in 1845, Abbé Gaume writes:
'This, then, is the great problem of our time: to render frankly, conscientiously Christian the rising generation. There is all the question ; but a matter of life or death.[…] The Catechism of Perseverance having as its goal, as its name indicates, to persevere in the study of religion and the practice of duties, we look at it, with our teachers in faith, as the best means of forming solidly Christian generations today.

One can imagine that it is with these good words in mind that the author undertook this work, the realization of which is absolutely beautiful: in addition to the binding and the frontispiece, the titles are calligraphic and the text itself is often decorated with highlighted words. The themes covered are numerous: 'The Theological Virtues', 'Instruction on the Law' (divine law, written law, law of Grace / human Law), 'Qualities of the Faith', Defects opposed to the Faith', 'The' Hope', 'Faults opposed to the virtue of Religion' (Blasphemy, sacrilege, Idolatry, Superstition)...
The defense of the Christian religion by this parishioner of Saint-Pierre de Montrouge (whose construction started under Napoleon III ended with his reign in 1870) is part of the full republican period, while the Sacred Heart, symbol of redemption and return of moral order is about to be inaugurated.
