Paris, Charpentier, 1839. In-12 (10.5 x 17.5 cm.). 2 ff. + 387 p.p. Vintage half-leather binding with corners stamped with fine braces on the joints and corners. Smooth back . Golden nets forming boxes decorated with plant motifs. Title and name of the author (in foot) gilded. Back, edges, covers, corners and caps rubbed. Joint of the second board very slightly split in the head. Very solid binding. First color guard damaged where an ex-libris was torn off. Title page cut at the top. Ex-libris wet stamp at the top of the dedication page (AP Hunter). Interior good. Rare foxing . Two sheets have a small tear towards the seam. A few dog-eared pages (see photos above).

First edition in-12 containing the Warning explaining the reasons for the withdrawal of the controversial preface to the first edition and dated June 1839.
