Henry-Louis-Charles Maret (1805-1881) was a French theologian, student of Saint-Sulpice who defended liberal and Gallican ideas, notably at the Vatican Council of December 1871. Here he undertook a defense of religion against pantheism, main enemy of religion, and according to him the foundation of the philosophy of the 19th century - in particular of Cousin's rationalism. To do this, he studies pantheism in its history : Egypt, Chaldea, Persia, China. Its Hindu origins: Vedas, code of Manu, Vedanta. The ancient doctrines: the mysteries, Pythagoras, the Gnostics. Neoplatonists, Plotinus, Giordano Bruno, Spinoza, up to Pierre Leroux, Guizot and Victor Cousin...
