Paris, Eugène Didier, 1852. Small in-12 (8.5 x 14.5 cm.). 110pp. + 1 f. Brown half-sheepskin binding. Smooth spine adorned with golden fillets. Gold title. Corners, caps, dishes and cuts rubbed. Lack of paper at the top corner of the first cover. A few dog-eared pages (see photos above).
Rare first edition of this 'philosophical novel' first published in the Constitutional in 1844 in a different version , the author having 'made the mistake of changing the outcome for morality and for the philosophy of history' . The last five chapters are unpublished here.
